Chinese New Year, also known as the Chinese Lunar New Year is one of if not the most important of all the traditional chinese holidays, despite it occuring during the winter time in China, it is known as the 'Spring Festival'. This year, the Chinese New year will take place on the 3rd of Feburary.Chinese new year is celebrated by many chinese all over the world in countries such as Mainland China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and many more. When celebrating the Chinese New Year it is a tradition for one to pour out their savings ony decorations, food, clothes and so on. It is also a tradition that every family throughly cleans the house to 'sweep away and ill-fortune' in hopes to make way for good luck. Doors and windows will be decorated with red chinese word cut outs with popular themes such as 'happiness','wealth' and 'longevity.Besides having a delicious renunion meal consisting of foods such as pigs, ducks, chickens and chinese sweets with relatives, children also recieve a red paper packet containing money from their relatives.
Every year we usually go to our cousins house for either dinner or lunch which usually consist of what i mentioned above. After the dinner would usually be the exchange of red packets and new year greetings, after which all the adults whould play a gambling game called 'Mahjong' at a large square table while the children would all go downstairs and burn time running around in the playground. This year i am really looking forward to the Chinese new year, mainly because of all those red packets! I wish everyone a prosperous and happy Chinese New Year!
